IMMORTAL STORY OF MAN AND WOMAN. POETICS AND PLASTICS OF LOVE.

Year 2013 is a double anniversary – 100 years of Rite of Spring and 90 years of Svadebka. Balet Moskva and french choreographer Regis Obadia present contemporary versions of both ballets.

Rite of Spring was created by Regis Obadia in 2003 and that year it was awarded Russian national theatrical prize Golden Mask.

The first performance of the Rite of Spring by Sergei Diaghilev’s Russian ballet in 1913 staged by Vaclav Nijinsky was a scandal. The music and, what’s more, the staging appeared to be too unusual. Since that time many choreographers addressed this work interpreting it in their own way.

In the centre of the ballet’s new version is the view of the world of contemporary man. This is a story of a young man “facing the mystery of cognition of woman, cognition of himself,” Obadia said during a meeting with journalists in Moscow. In his show, the protagonist exists in a tough urbanised world devoid of human warmth. “But the existential problems, the inward struggle are the same that in the days of the pagan Rus,” the choreographer stressed.

Stravinsky’s Wedding was also re-constructed by Regis Obadia in a contemporary way. This work is pretty new for Balet Moskva and is a full premier of 2012-2013.

Regis Obadia

Régis Obadia, a famous French stage director and choreographer, is fairly well known in Russia. More than ten years ago he came to Moscow for the first time as a dancer and choreographer to show Muscovites his duo, called “Welcome to Paradise”, as well as several dancing-movies. In the spring of 2004 there took place the premiere of “The Sacred Spring”, staged by Régis Obadia at ‘Moskva’ Russky Kamernyi Balet (Moscow Russian Chamber Ballet Theatre) in collaboration with the Gosudarstvennyi Teatr Natzyi (State Theatre of Nations). His success was more than obvious: the production brought him a prestigious Golden Masque Prize. Further he also directed “Idiot” at Russki Akademicheski Malyi Teatr (RAMT), the comments that followed being very controversial: no one doubted Maestro’s talent, but the very idea of rendering the plot of F. Dostoyevsky’s great novel by means of modern dance called heated discussions. However, it was for that work that Régis Obadia was awarded Chaika Prize in Make a Step nomination.

MUSIC

Игорь Стравинский

Igor Stravinsky

Igor Stravinsky was a Russian (and later, a naturalized French and American) composer, pianist and conductor. He is widely considered one of the most important and influential composers of the 20th century. Stravinsky was born on 17 June 1882 in Oranienbaum, a suburb of Saint Petersburg, the Russian imperial capital, and was brought up in Saint Petersburg. His parents were Fyodor Stravinsky, a bass singer at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, and Anna (née Kholodovsky).

Despite his enthusiasm for music, his parents expected him to study law. Stravinsky enrolled at the University of Saint Petersburg in 1901, but he attended fewer than fifty class sessions during his four years of study. In the summer of 1902 Stravinsky stayed with the composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and his family in the German city of Heidelberg, where Rimsky-Korsakov, arguably the leading Russian composer at that time, suggested to Stravinsky that he should not enter the Saint Petersburg Conservatoire, but instead study composing by taking private lessons, in large part because of his age.

In February 1909, two orchestral works, the Scherzo fantastique and Feu d’artifice (Fireworks) were performed at a concert in Saint Petersburg, where they were heard by Sergei Diaghilev, who was at that time involved in planning to present Russian opera and ballet in Paris. Diaghilev was sufficiently impressed byFireworks to commission Stravinsky to carry out some orchestrations and then to compose a full-length ballet score, The Firebird. Over the next four years, Stravinsky and his family lived in Russia during the summer months and spent each winter in Switzerland. During this period, Stravinsky composed two further works for the Ballets Russes: Petrushka (1911), and Le Sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring; 1913).

In 1939 Stravinsky moved to USA where he addressed to jazz music traditions and wrote Black Concerto for Clarinet and Jazz-Orchestra. In 1971 he died.
