THE NUTCRACKER

“A SYMPHONY OF CHILDHOOD”

Boris Asafiev, prominent Russian musicologist, composer and teacher, wrote:  “Nutcracker is a symphony of childhood. Or rather of the time when childhood is at the turning point. When one is already excited with promises of youth, which is still a mystery, but the child’s habits and fears linger in the mind… When dreams carry thoughts and feelings forward, to the unpenetrated world – the anticipated life”.

Choreographer Vasily Vainonen created his edition in 1934. He  invented ideal performance for children. There were magic tricks, beautiful dolls and Christmas tree. The ballet has its wonderful, romantic and  fairy atmosphere.

Choreography really transfers  mystery and mysticism of Hoffmann’s fairy tales. Together with Tchaikovsky’s music, set designs and costumes this ballet becomes a masterpiece which is popular for many years.

No matter how old you are but every time the Mouse King appears people are really excited about it. And the triumph of good over evil make them believe that next year happiness happens!
